How to Check and Understand a Science Fact
Discover how to make sense of interesting science facts, check whether they are trustworthy, and remember the ideas behind them.

Science facts are easy to share and easy to strip of context. A sentence about light, cells, or temperature is far more useful when you also know the mechanism behind it.
Before repeating a claim, check where it came from, what conditions apply, and whether independent sources agree. Those three questions catch a surprising amount of bad science.
Look for the explanation behind the claim
A strong science fact connects an observation to an explanation. “A day on Venus is longer than its year” is interesting on its own, but the useful idea is that a planet’s rotation and its orbit are separate motions. Once you understand that relationship, the sentence becomes a compact lesson in astronomy rather than isolated trivia.
Good facts also have sensible boundaries. A claim might be accurate only under specific laboratory conditions, for one species, or at a particular scale. Those details are not clutter; they tell you what the evidence actually supports.

- It explains why or how the phenomenon happens.
- It avoids turning an estimate into an exact universal rule.
- It gives enough context to prevent a misleading interpretation.
How to check a surprising claim
Start by identifying the type of claim. Measurements are best checked against a scientific agency or reference work. Health claims require especially careful sourcing and should distinguish early research from medical consensus. A claim about a new study should point to the study itself, not only an article summarizing it.
Then look for agreement among independent, reputable sources. Exact wording may differ, but the underlying explanation should remain consistent. If every page repeats the same dramatic sentence without naming evidence, that repetition is not confirmation.
Make the fact easier to remember
Memory improves when a new idea has something to attach to. After reading a fact, restate it in your own words and connect it to something familiar. You can also ask one follow-up question: What causes this? What would change it? Where else does the same principle appear?
Short, regular reading works because it is easy to repeat. You do not need to memorize everything. Aim to understand one idea well enough to explain it in your own words.
